Bacteria - RuminococcusUpdated a year ago
Ruminococcus is a keystone beneficial bacteria in your gut. This bacteria helps to break down resistant starches, plant materials and carbohydrates in general. Healthy levels of Ruminococcus have been shown to stabilize the intestinal barrier, reverse diarrhea, lower the risk of colorectal cancer and decrease the chance of type 2 diabetes and kidney stones. While healthy levels of Ruminococcus are important, elevated levels have been associated with IBS. It’s important to eat foods such as fish, walnuts, extra-virgin olive oil, whole grains and leafy greens since these foods help facilitate healthy levels and species of Ruminococcus. It is important to minimize foods such as dairy, red meat and legumes since these foods can cause unhealthy strains of Ruminococcus to grow.
