Bacteria - LactobacillusUpdated a year ago
Lactobacillus bacteria are a genus characterized by their production of lactic acid as a byproduct of their metabolism. Lactic acid is important in regulating our energy levels, maintaining a healthy weight, keeping bad bacteria from overgrowing, decreasing cholesterol and even helping to prevent certain cancers. This genus of bacteria also helps to break down lactose in milk products. These bacteria might look familiar to you if you’ve ever taken probiotics before since they are the most commonly used in probiotic supplements. Some people wonder why we use lactobacillus in their probiotic supplements even if their levels of lactobacillus are high and other bacteria are low. This is because lactobacillus bacteria actually help facilitate the growth of other beneficial bacteria in the gut to create a more balanced microbiome overall. Some foods to help boost these probiotic bacteria are sauerkraut, yogurt, miso, tempeh, and other fermented foods. If you want to read more, I have linked some articles below.
