Bacteria - AkkermansiaUpdated a year ago
Akkermansia is a beneficial probiotic bacteria found in the intestinal tract. While Akkermansia only makes up 1-5% of your gut bacteria, it is still important. Akkermansia has been shown to be inversely correlated with many different diseases such as irritable bowel disease, obesity, irritable bowel syndrome, and type 2 diabetes. Current research is being done on whether Akkermansia can cure metabolic diseases and help to decrease body fat and type 2 diabetes, and the results are promising. However, there is still a lot of research left to be done. Akkermansia has also been shown to decrease inflammation and boost immune system function. Akkermansia cannot be directly put into probiotic supplements with current technology, but there is a lot you can do to boost existing levels. Consuming foods rich in polyphenols such as dark leafy greens, berries, green tea, dark chocolate and plenty of lean proteins is a great way to begin to increase your Akkermansia levels. In addition, observing periods of fasting has been shown to boost levels of Akkermansia. If you want to learn more, check out the links to a couple of scientific articles below.
